PangaPanga (Millettiastuhlmannii)

Description
Trade name: PangaPanga
Other common names: Partridge Wood, Kswahili: Mpande

  • Heartwood-chocolate brown with alternate bands of dark & light colored tissues
  • Sapwood yellowish-white
  • Striking figure on tangetial surface. Linear dark stripes on radial surfaces
  • Very good polishing qualities
  • A truely beautiful dark wood
  • High resistance to attact by fungi & termites

Characteristics: Seasons well and comparatively quickly. Sawing and machining is some what difficult but moulds and turns well. PangaPanga is resistant to insects and is classified as very durable. Its strength properties are excellent and very similar to mtundu and jarrah. It is also highly resistant to abrasion.

Paurosa (Swartziamadagarensis)

Description
Other Common names: Kswahili - Msekeseke

  • Sapwood distinct, White or pale brown
  • Heartwood is pink, Yellow of dark brown
  • Fine red brown, gold veins
  • High resistance to weather
  • Naturally resistant to insects and termites

Characteristics: Dries slowly with very small degrades. Resistant to termites, used as alternative for palisander and Bubinga.An attractive wood.

  • Density: 61 lb/cu.ft.

Mkarati (Erythrophloeumsuaveolens)

Trade Name: Mkarati, Missanda
Other common Names: Kswahili: Mkarati,Mwavi

  • Heartwood is red-brown and darkens upon exposure
  • Sapwood is cream-white to yellowish - white
  • Natural resistance to decay is reported to be high
  • Recommended for home use as well as high density commercial use

Characteristics: Dries slowly with small degrades. Works well by machine tools and is resistant to termites. It is one of the most durable East African woods, highly resistant to attack by borers, decaying fungi, and be reputed to be resistant to teredo.

 Muhuhu (Brachylaenahutchinsii)

Trade Name: Muhuhu
Other common Names: Kswahili: Mkarambati,Muhuhu

  • Heartwood: bright yellow, brown darkens to yellowish brown
  • Has an aromatic spicy scent
  • High resistance to wear
  • Very heavy. High density

Characteristics: Dries fairly rapidly with some tendency for surface checking and end-splitting but no distortion. Muhuhu is very hard but works well with power tools. Planing requires care although the wood moulds and turns cleanly. Takes a brilliant polish. Exceptionally resistant to decay, termites and marine borers. High resistance to abrasion and indentation.
